Updated Gingerbread Recipe

I was not very happy with my first gingerbread recipe, so I tried this one and let my cousin put it together on Christmas.  She had a little too much fun.

Gingerbread House Recipe

6 cups all purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
4 teaspoons ground ginger
4 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves or allspice
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 sticks (12 Tbsp) butter, softened
1 1/2 cups packed light brown sugar
2 large eggs
1 cup dark molasses
1 Tbsp water
  1. In a large bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, salt, and spices.
  2. In another large bowl, beat butter and sugar until fluffy.
  3. Beat in eggs, molasses, and water until well combined.
  4. Gradually beat in flour until blended. Knead by hand if necessary.
  5. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate at least two hours, preferably overnight.
  6. When baking, let dough sit for 10 minutes and then roll out to about 1/4 inch thickness. Use flour as needed.
  7. Cut out design using cardboard templates.
  8. Bake for approximately 10 minutes at 350 F.
